What do I do if I miss my train?

Table of Contents
  1. If you miss your reserved-seat train
    • Your reserved seat booking is lost once that train departs.
      No refund.
  2. Can you still travel later the same day?
    • Yes — you can board a later train on the same day and sit in a non-reserved ordinary car (自由席), if that train has one.
    • You cannot simply sit in another reserved seat unless you pay again.
  3. What about trains where all seats are reserved?
    • Some trains have no non-reserved cars.
    • For these specific trains, if you miss your booked train, JR usually lets you take a later same-day train in a standing seat / unreserved overflow basis:
      • Kagayaki
      • Narita Express
      • Azusa
    • Meaning: you may board later, but stand inside the car until it departs, and then sit in any unoccupied seat. Note that if someone has booked that seat later in the journey, you will need to give up the seat.
  4. Important catch
    • For other all-reserved trains not listed above, if you miss it:
    • You cannot automatically use a later train.
    • You may need to buy a new ticket.

Easy Examples
